Doncaster is a large South Yorkshire town, central to the metropolitan borough of Doncaster, an area which boasts a population of a little over 300,000 people. The town is believed to be one of the earliest towns in England, with the Romans purported to have settled in the fort of Danum in the first century AD.

Doncaster’s modern history has deep connections with the rail industry after the Great Northern Railway moved its engine building works, the Doncaster Locomotive and Carriage Building Works, to the town in 1853. This in turn means that the town is famed for the production of some of the most famous names in the field, such as “The Flying Scotsman” and “The Mallard”.

Together with the local waterways, including the River Don, the railway system played a very important role in the transport of goods from the major local coal and steel industries.

Situated around 20 miles North East of the city of Sheffield, Doncaster still enjoys excellent transport links with easy access to the national motorway network. Doncaster railway station enjoys connections to many of the UK’s largest cities including London, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow amongst others, and the town is also home to Doncaster Sheffield Airport, formerly known as Robin Hood Airport.

Benefitting from such an excellent logistical location, modern industry is thriving in the town, and industrial property is plentiful. The Steel, Glass and Chemical industries play a prominent role in the local economy, with Bridon Ropes believed to boast the largest wire rope manufacturing facility in Europe.

Also due to the excellent transport links, Doncaster houses a wide range of commercial warehouse premises inhabited by some of the UK’s largest retail brands. Household names such as Tesco, B&Q, Ikea, Amazon and Next, amongst others, all have distribution centres in Doncaster bringing much employment to the region.

The town of Doncaster enjoys a rich social and cultural profile, which attracts many visitors to the area. The racecourse is one of the oldest and most famous in the UK, holding several big meets annually, whilst Doncaster Rovers are, similarly, one of the oldest football clubs in England. Alongside many a reference to the railway and aviation industries in the town, the Norman castle at Conisborough and the 1749 Mansion House, which is one of only three in England, there are also several museums which are also very popular visitor attractions.

All in all, Doncaster is a very attractive proposition for any company looking to establish a base for it’s business premises.

The town has continued to benefit from significant investment in regeneration projects, particularly in the town centre and waterfront areas, whilst the aforementioned airport is the UK’s fastest growing international airport outside of London.
